The race to create the world\u2019s first commercially-successful augmented reality (AR) headset is heating up!<\/p>\n

Many see \u2014 and justifiably so \u2014 the AR headset\u00a0as the sole piece of \u201cwearable\u201d tech that could catapult user \/ consumer experiences to another level.<\/em><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve touched on how AR is \u2014 and will continue to \u2014 transform the way we shop as well as enhance gaming experiences.<\/p>\n

But, one aspect of AR that may be just as important as any other yet is not discussed enough:<\/p>\n

How close are we to stylish, lightweight AR headsets?<\/em><\/p>\n

No matter how advanced the AR software may get that any company develops \u2014\u00a0including us here at OVR<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 the bottom line for most consumers is this:<\/p>\n

If they either don\u2019t like or don\u2019t like to carry around AR headsets, then the chances of them using AR Headsets is slim to none.<\/strong><\/p>\n

So, how close are we\u00a0truly\u00a0<\/em>to lightweight & stylish AR headset design?<\/p>\n

Well, take a look at this first to see what it\u2019s like to explore the latest in AR headsets at AWE, the world\u2019s largest Augmented Reality Expo.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Now, let\u2019s discuss some reasons creating a stylish, lightweight AR Headset is so difficult to achieve. After this, we\u2019ll end with the way we\u2019re approaching AR headset design here at OVR. Sound good?<\/p>\n

OK, let\u2019s dig in.<\/p>\n

WHY IS THIS SO DIFFICULT TO ACHIEVE?<\/h2>\n

There are two main reasons why creating stylish & lightweight headsets is so difficult to achieve.<\/em><\/p>\n

First:<\/h2>\n

It\u2019s not easy getting high-level function and visuals into a sleek design. This is related mostly to our expectations as end-users.<\/p>\n

No matter the amount of innovation or development that goes into the making of an AR headset, what matters most to us as end-users is:<\/p>\n

Is the quality of the visual comparable \u2014 or better \u2014 than what we can experience on our smartphones?<\/em><\/p>\n

It\u2019s important to remember\u00a0<\/strong>here that at this point most people spend their time consuming visual content that\u2019s pretty much HD quality,\u00a0at least.<\/em><\/p>\n

So,\u00a0even though AR offers a reality placed on top of our reality,<\/strong>\u00a0it still remains that we are by and large used to a particular type of visual experience.<\/p>\n

Wouldn\u2019t you agree?<\/em><\/p>\n

Secondly:<\/h2>\n

If AR Headsets aren\u2019t stylish enough to be worn as sunglasses that one would wear\u00a0whether AR capable or not<\/strong>, then there\u2019s a good chance people won\u2019t wear them.<\/p>\n

This is the second reason why this so difficult to achieve.<\/em><\/p>\n

AR Headsets \u2014 essentially \u2014 compete with non-AR sunglasses.<\/p>\n

So, the question for many consumers:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Should I buy a pair of RayBans, Oakley\u2019s or [insert AR Headset here]?<\/em><\/p>\n

Event though of course this may likely not be the set of eye wear a potential buyer would choose from (those wanting AR Headsets may not be in the market as well for stylish RayBans)\u00a0this is only to make a point:<\/strong><\/p>\n

AR Headsets must be stylish enough for end-users to wear them daily.<\/em><\/p>\n

And because of all the tech involved, as mentioned, this is difficult to achieve.<\/p>\n
